Discover why Tarangire is one of Africa's top birding destinations with over 550 recorded species, including Tanzanian endemics found nowhere else on Earth.
Tarangire National Park is consistently ranked among the top five birding destinations in Africa, with over 550 species recorded within its boundaries. Our dedicated bird watching expedition is led by specialist birding guides who possess an encyclopaedic knowledge of the park's avifauna and can identify species by call alone — a skill that is essential in the dense woodland and riverine habitats where many of Tarangire's most sought-after birds reside.
The expedition departs early, when dawn chorus fills the baobab woodland with an extraordinary symphony of calls. Top targets include the Yellow-collared Lovebird, a Tanzanian endemic that nests in the cavities of baobab trees and is abundant around the camp area. The Ashy Starling — another species found only in Tanzania — is a quieter but equally prized sighting, its subtle grey plumage a contrast to the flamboyant Superb Starling that accompanies nearly every game drive. The park's raptors are magnificent: Bateleur Eagles with their dramatic rocking flight, Martial Eagles scanning for prey from enormous heights, and the African Hawk-Eagle hunting francolins through the woodland.
The riverine areas support a different community entirely — Giant Kingfishers, African Fish Eagles, Goliath Herons, and the elusive Pel's Fishing Owl, one of the most sought-after species on any African birding list. During the wet season from November to April, Tarangire fills with Palearctic and intra-African migrants, boosting the species count dramatically. Breeding plumage transforms familiar species into dazzling spectacles — the Pin-tailed Whydah trails its extraordinary tail feathers through the grass, and the Red Bishop glows like a burning coal from its reed-bed perch. The expedition typically runs four to five hours and includes detailed field notes, a species checklist, and expert guidance on photography. Binoculars and field guides are available for loan.
