Welcome to Tarangire Nature Camp Among the Ancient Baobabs

Tarangire Nature Camp is a boutique safari retreat set along the banks of the Tarangire River, deep within Tarangire National Park in northern Tanzania. Surrounded by towering baobab trees — some over a thousand years old — and overlooking a stretch of river that draws vast herds of elephants during the dry season, our camp offers one of the most visually striking and wildlife-rich safari settings in East Africa. Tarangire is Tanzania's sixth-largest national park, covering 2,850 square kilometres of rolling hills, seasonal swamps, and open woodland that supports one of the highest densities of wildlife outside the Serengeti.

Location and Setting

The camp is positioned in the northern sector of Tarangire National Park, perched on an elevated ridge above a bend in the Tarangire River. From the communal lounge and each guest tent, you look out across a vast flood plain where elephants, buffalo, and wildebeest gather in numbers that must be seen to be believed. The landscape here is unlike anywhere else in Tanzania: colossal baobab trees — the iconic upside-down trees of Africa — punctuate the golden grasslands, their massive trunks providing nesting cavities for owls, starlings, and the park's famous Yellow-collared Lovebirds. Tarangire sits at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, and the views from camp stretch across a primordial landscape that has remained essentially unchanged for millennia.

Location and Setting
What to Expect

Tarangire offers a distinctly different safari rhythm to the more visited parks of the northern circuit. Here, you are unlikely to encounter large numbers of other vehicles. Game drives have an exploratory quality — your guide reading fresh elephant tracks in the dust, pausing to identify a Bateleur Eagle circling overhead, or stopping to watch a family of dwarf mongooses emerge from a termite mound. The dry season from June to November is spectacular, when tens of thousands of animals converge on the Tarangire River as surrounding water sources dry up. During this period, elephant concentrations reach staggering levels, with herds of 200 or more moving through the acacia woodland. The wet season from December to May transforms the park into a lush green paradise alive with migratory birds and newborn animals.

What to Expect
Wildlife

Tarangire is rightly famous for its elephants. The park supports an estimated 2,500 elephants, and during the dry season this number swells as herds migrate from surrounding areas. Watching a matriarch lead her extended family down the riverbank to drink, calves tucked protectively between the legs of their mothers, is one of Africa's great wildlife moments. Beyond elephants, Tarangire harbours lion, leopard, cheetah, African wild dog, lesser kudu, fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk, and large herds of buffalo. The Silale Swamps in the southern reaches of the park attract hippo and waterbirds in abundance. Tarangire is also one of Africa's premier birding destinations, with over 550 species recorded including several Tanzanian endemics such as the Yellow-collared Lovebird and the Ashy Starling — species found nowhere else on Earth.

Accommodation

Our guest tents are elevated canvas-and-wood structures positioned along the riverbank, each one angled to offer unobstructed views of the Tarangire flood plain and the ancient baobabs that define this landscape. Interiors are fitted with handcrafted wooden furniture, comfortable beds draped in mosquito netting, and en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and hot bucket showers heated over a wood fire. Solar lighting provides a warm glow in the evenings, and each tent has a spacious private deck — the ideal spot for an afternoon cup of Tanzanian tea while watching elephants move silently past your doorstep.

Accommodation
Dining

Our open-sided dining banda overlooks the river, and meals are prepared by our resident chef using fresh produce from local markets in the nearby town of Kwa Kuchinja and seasonal vegetables from our camp garden. Breakfasts feature Tanzanian chapati, fresh tropical fruits including mango and papaya, omelettes, and locally roasted coffee. Lunches are served at camp or packed for full-day adventures, and dinners are candlelit affairs featuring dishes inspired by Tanzanian, Indian, and continental traditions — reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Swahili Coast. On clear nights, dinner is served under the stars with the Southern Cross visible overhead.

Getting Here

One of Tarangire's great advantages is its proximity to Arusha, the safari capital of northern Tanzania. The drive from Arusha to Tarangire Nature Camp takes approximately two hours along a well-maintained tarmac road, passing through Maasai steppe dotted with homesteads and grazing cattle before arriving at the park gate. This makes Tarangire an ideal first or last stop on a northern Tanzania safari circuit. Light aircraft transfers to the Kuro Airstrip within the park can also be arranged for guests combining Tarangire with the Serengeti or other remote destinations. Our team handles all transfers and logistics, so your only job is to arrive ready for the wild.
