Visit a Maasai community near Tarangire to learn about their centuries-old pastoral traditions, cattle culture, and the relationship between people and wildlife.

The landscape surrounding Tarangire National Park is home to several Maasai communities that have coexisted with wildlife for centuries, and our cultural village visit offers a respectful, meaningful opportunity to learn about one of East Africa's most iconic and resilient cultures. The visit takes place at a community-run cultural boma located just outside the park boundary, where Maasai families welcome guests into their daily lives.

Upon arrival, you are greeted by community elders and young warriors — the morani — who perform a traditional welcome dance accompanied by rhythmic chanting and the vertical leaping that has become synonymous with Maasai identity. A guided walk through the boma reveals the architecture of the traditional Maasai homestead: low, domed houses built from a framework of branches plastered with a mixture of mud, cow dung, and ash that provides remarkable insulation against both heat and cold. Inside, a Maasai mother demonstrates the preparation of chai — tea simmered with milk, sugar, and fragrant spices over a smoky central hearth.

The visit includes a conversation with community members about the challenges and opportunities of living alongside a national park. The Maasai are pastoralists whose livelihood depends on cattle, and their relationship with wildlife is complex, pragmatic, and deeply rooted in cultural belief. You will learn about traditional herbal medicine, the significance of cattle in Maasai ceremonies and social status, and the community-based conservation initiatives that are helping to protect the wildlife corridors between Tarangire and neighbouring parks. A small market offers handmade beadwork, traditional jewellery, and carved items, with all proceeds going directly to the community. The visit lasts approximately two hours and can be combined with a morning or afternoon game drive. A portion of the visit fee is contributed to a community education fund.
