Explore Tarangire on foot with an armed ranger, walking among ancient baobab trees and towering termite mounds to discover the small wonders of the bush.
A walking safari in Tarangire is a sensory journey through one of the most distinctive landscapes in East Africa. Accompanied by an armed TANAPA ranger and one of our senior guides, you step out of the vehicle and into the cathedral-like spaces between the ancient baobab trees, where the sounds, smells, and textures of the African bush surround you completely.
The walk typically covers three to five kilometres over two to three hours, moving at a pace that allows for observation and learning. Your guide will introduce you to the complex ecology of the baobab woodland: these extraordinary trees can live for over 2,000 years, store up to 120,000 litres of water in their swollen trunks, and provide food and shelter for dozens of species from elephants to owls. You will examine the massive termite mounds that punctuate the landscape — structures built by colonies of millions that regulate their internal temperature to within a single degree, an engineering feat that has inspired human architects around the world.
On foot, you notice what the vehicle misses: the delicate tracks of a steenbok in the dust, the stripped bark where an elephant has fed, the medicinal plants used by local communities for generations, and the intricate web of a golden orb spider stretched between two thorn bushes. Birdlife is particularly rewarding on a walking safari — ground-nesting species like coursers and thick-knees are far more visible on foot, and your guide can point out the distinctive calls of species hidden in the canopy. Walking safaris are available in the morning and are suitable for guests aged 16 and above. The experience is subject to conditions and ranger availability.
